I started foundered last year to help people better understand money and to build wealth. I always said that if I can help one person better their financial position, that’s good enough. But the more I speak to, the better.
Please note the event happened on Tuesday 12th September. But the live recording is available below.
As of last week, over 100,000 people have read my words and over 185,000 have watched my videos. In the scheme of things, these are incredibly small numbers and really just vanity metrics at best. Yet I receive dozens of messages a week from people thanking me for my efforts or asking questions they hope I can further answer. And I do. And this means a lot.
Being a content creator is often a one-sided endeavour and you really only get a response from the extremes. Those who love your content and those who don’t. And I get it. My content isn’t for everyone, and that’s ok.
But I’ll continue to do so because quite frankly, I really enjoy it.
If you’re new here, foundered focuses on 4 main pillars of content.
- Earning more
- Spending less
- Investing
- Retiring early
And it’s primarily targeted at those in their 30s or early 40s. Because that’s who I am and who I can talk directly to, sharing my own experience and knowledge. While I hope I can communicate confidently on the majority of topics, it’d be arrogant of me to think I know everything.
The reality is that I am a lifelong learner and many articles I write require me to further understand the topic beyond what I already know. And that’s a fantastic way to spend my retirement. When we stop learning we start dying.
I write personal finance content and I talk about it daily. Because of this, it’s very easy to fall into a thought process of believing everyone talks about money all the time.
Yet personal finance isn’t widely understood and in many people’s lives, it’s ignored. Until it can’t be.
Generally, people know they should pay off their debt and that one day they’ll live off their pension. But how they plan for this and actually do it are scantily known.
Over the past 10 months, one topic has been repeatedly noted in my discussions. Both from my personal financial coaching clients as well as those I speak to on and offline. And that’s investing.
Many of you reading this will be avid investors. Yet many won’t. And until you start investing, it’s scary. Language is used to gatekeep and stop us from investing. There’s also a significant barrier to entry and that is, the potential to lose our hard-earned money.
Investing is gambling, right?
If you come from a childhood household like mine, investing was akin to gambling. And you stayed away from it at all costs. Because you will lose money. And I’m not alone when I say this.
Many people I speak to, many avid savers have a significant fear or anxiety about investing. Yet, when I work through the steps of doing so and help them understand investing even just a little bit better, their expression towards it noticeably changes.
In my opinion, you can’t save your way to wealth. Well, you can, but it’s a whole lot harder than putting your money to work for you through investing.
